Summer and Winter

Writer's picture: Mike WadeMike Wade

The summer nectar flow is just starting here. Brambles and clover are flowering and they provide most of our honey crop for the year. Just one week ago there was so little nectar available we were having to start feeding bees now they are gathering a surplus and it wont be long before we are adding boxes to the hives for the honey crop.

But.... there is equally important work for us, and that is getting ready for winter. With one or two hives winter preparations are simple but with 100 we need to start preparing now.

First winter prep step is to get the sugar we will need for bulk feeding after the honey crop comes off and before it gets too cold. In the coming few days and weeks we will be mixing this with water to make sugar Syrup.
