A shocking statistic is that the average age of beekeepers here in the UK is 65. Yep 65 years old. I suspect the reason for this is the cost of getting started and different priorities for the younger generations.
Here, I'm trying to do my bit to buck the trend a little. Though I might feel 65 at times I've still got a few years to go. But my son Dylan expressed an interest in the bees from about 5 years old. Perhaps because he sees it as a man-thing since mummy doesnt do it but daddy does, or just as a way to spend time with me, or because he loves learning stuff, I'm not sure.
Over the coming few weeks and months I'm teaching him a little about the business of beekeeping. How to make new colonies of bees, how to make queen bees and how to sell bees. Who knows whether he will retain his interest into the future or lose it when he discovers girls. But for now I'm really enjoying spending a little time with him sharing my passion with him.
In the pictures he is learing to make a new colony and introduce a queen to them. Hes make two colonies. One he will keep and build up the other one, when ready, he will sell and keep the profits for himself. Learning about income and expenses, the time and discipline involved in producing a good colony of bees, etc.
